Akanmu, New DSA, Assures Students of Improved Service Delivery

The Acting Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Ilorin, Dr. Alex Akanmu, has pledged to deliver efficient, student-friendly, and modern services for the University’s student body. In a chat with UNILORIN Bulletin on Monday, August 12, 2024, Dr. Akanmu assured that his administration would prioritize the welfare of all students and ensure they experience a supportive academic environment.

Dr. Akanmu, who also serves as the Chairman of the UNILORIN Branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), emphasized that his tenure would focus on promoting a “reasonable and acceptable dress code” on campus. He reiterated that the Directorate of Student Affairs is committed to the overall well-being of students, including those residing off-campus, ensuring their safety and care regardless of where they live.

One of the key initiatives Akanmu unveiled was the automation of the clearance process for graduating students, aiming to streamline their mobilisation into the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Additionally, he promised to collaborate with campus transporters to improve transportation services for students, both on and off-campus, and explore ways to attract more transport operators to serve University routes.

Efforts are also underway to fully automate the registration process for student associations, clubs, and organizations, ensuring easier communication and reporting of any campus-related issues. Dr. Akanmu mentioned plans for periodic enlightenment programmes to encourage commercial vehicle operators to prioritize safety, promoting the well-being of both students and the University community.

The new Dean expressed his commitment to enhancing the quality of services provided by private hostel operators and ensuring that students receive the services they pay for, while also combatting any form of extortion. He promised to work with those responsible for University-owned hostels to raise service standards as well.

Dr. Akanmu extended his gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, for entrusting him with the role and for the Vice-Chancellor’s dedication to student welfare. He assured that preparations are underway to welcome new and returning students, with particular focus on helping freshmen adjust to University life.

As a former President of the University’s Student Union, Dr. Akanmu emphasized that the interests of the students would be his top priority, describing them as the most important segment of the University community.
